Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from the water. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate harmful pathogens in your home’s water and destroy illness-causing microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA). This is extremely efficient in eliminating their ability to reproduce.

Does UV light work in all water conditions? No. UV light will only travel in a straight line so any shadow or obstruction will reduce its efficiency. Water that is not filtered can contain iron, manganese and other particles that can either absorb or scatter UV light reducing the effectiveness of the disinfection system.

A UV light can enter an infectious agent’s genetic material (DNA) and destroy it, preventing it from spreading on the water. This water purification method can disinfect 99.99% of harmful pathogens. This eco-friendly method is also chemical-free, so it does not alter the water’s odor and taste. How Does Ultraviolet Water Filtration Work?

It’s the same principle at work when purifying water. The UV light disrupts the DNA by destroying the nucleic acids and puts a serious damper on cellular functions which ultimately leads to the germs dying. It should be noted that UV light will kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms but it does not filter them out of the water.

Ultraviolet purification itself is not enough to purify water down to drinking water purposes. This is because the UV radiation is only effective for treating bacteria and viruses. UV light does not work to eliminate contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals and VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds).

As a water treatment technique, UV is known to be an effective disinfectant due to its strong germicidal (inactivating) ability. UV disinfects water containing bacteria and viruses and can be effective against protozoans like, Giardia lamblia cysts or Cryptosporidium oocysts.
