Sometimes a sponge filter isn't great when you are going for a certain aesthetics. Sometimes you have so much plant matter in your tank that all you might need is mechanical filtration or no filtration at all. Those are just some reasons I can think of as to why not for a sponge filter. Personally, I have an airstone in all my tanks. Happy Holidays!
Keep in mind that by adding an airstone to a sponge filter you a reducing it's effective pumping rate....flow through the sponge will be slower, and may not flow at all as it clogs overtime. Larger bubbles are ideal when using an airlift.-Ryan
An air stone is a small weighted bubbler that produces very small bubbles in the water. This simple accessory helps to gradually diffuse air into the tank and minimizes the amount of bubbling noise you’ll hear. ***never-clog-air-stone***. A sponge filter uses air to provide mechanical and biological filtration.

Two stacks: Base + Step + Strainer + 1/2 Sponge + Bullseye + Lifttube + AquaClear 10 powerhead (80 gph). Two of those in a well-planted tank gives 160 GPH circulation, and plenty of filtration in my opinion. The sponge is mostly for mechanical filtration; plants do biological filtration.
A sponge filter is the simplest form of all aquarium filters; they consist of three parts; a sponge filter that is placed inside the tank, an air pump that is located outside the tank, and an airline tubing that connects the two. One of the things that make a sponge filter the ideal cleaning material for your aquarium is that they are cheap and they do allow for modifications to be made.
If you have an aquarium filter that is run by an air pump, an air stone will be beneficial. An air stone will create an abundant cascade of small to tiny bubbles rather than a limited number of larger bubbles. These smaller bubbles will be much more effective at moving water through the filter, making the filter more effective and efficient.
For most of us here we use an open ended airline attached to a sponge filter. This works great for use in an airlift, but is rather poor for transfering oxygen into the water. Using a diffuser in the lift tube of the sponge filter will increase the oxygen transfer efficiency, but will reduce the pumping rate through the filter.
